Capsule Geology

The Ken area is underlain by Stikine Assemblage rock consisting of Mississippian andesite flows, flow breccias, massive to layered ash-lapilli tuffs, together with thin-bedded tuffaceous siltstones, minor grits, and thin (less than 15 metres) units of fossiliferous, crinoid-bearing limestone. A few minor intrusions are present including some dikes of quartz monzonite and andesite. Leuco-syenite dikes have been observed in drill holes.

This Ken showing measured 60 metres long by 20 metres wide and was discovered by the Newmont Mining in 1961. Mineralization was observed to consist of garnet-magnetite-epidote skarn conformable with tuffaceous volcanics, cherts and argillites. Barite is also reported. Skarn widths varying from 0.6 to 9.0 metres are representative of original stratigraphic thicknesses. These skarns generally strike northeast and dip 40 to 50 degrees southeast. Anomalous gold values were obtained from tabular segregations of chalcopyrite, pyrite and calcite found within the garnet-magnetite epidote skarns. A 5.4 metre interval in DDH 88PG1 assayed 2.81 grams per tonne gold and 0.832 per cent copper (Assessment Report 18506).

At the Rope showing, about 200 metres from the Ken showing, garnet-magnetite-epidote skarns similar to the Ken Showing and Glacier Zone occurs. The skarn outcrops on the northern side of the Rope showing outcrop while volcanics are exposed on the southern side. The skarn width is variable from 1.0 to 1.5 metres measured from discontinuously exposed layering. Chalcopyrite, pyrite, arsenopyrite and hematite are hosted within the skarn as massive and disseminated replacements near the inferred volcanic-skarn contact. The Ken and Rope zones may represent structurally offset segments of what was originally a single east-west to east-southeast trending skarn horizon.

Drilling in 2012 resulted in the identification of three distinct zones of mineralization: (1) the Upper gold zone characterized by sulphides and magnetite-rich skarns containing gold, copper, silver and scandium; (2) Lower gold zone featuring a network of thin veins hosting visible gold; and (3) the Scandium zone, which appears to correlate with an underlying volcanic basalt. Collectively, these three zones are believed to be a volcanic massive sulphide (VMS) mineralizing system. Historic drilling in the area was limited to shallow observations.

Typical mineralization encountered at the Ken zone is best observed in drill hole KZ12-12 where a continuous mineralized interval, 105.57 metres (346.35 feet) in width, assayed 0.40 gram per tonne gold and 25.98 grams per tonne scandium. The most notable mineralization within the Upper gold zone was encountered in drill hole KZ12-08, which intersected 3.28 metres (10.76 feet) that assayed 1.39 grams per tonne gold, 0.43 per cent copper, 5.34 grams per tonne silver and 8.30 grams per tonne scandium, within which a 0.68-metre (2.23-feet) interval assayed 5.75 grams per tonne gold, 1.73 per cent copper, 14.70 grams per tonne silver and 7.90 grams per tonne scandium (Assessment Report 33620; Romios Gold, NEWs Release Nov.13, 2012).

Another Upper gold zone intersection of note was encountered in drill hole KZ12-13, where a continuous intersection of 6.08 metres (19.95 feet) assayed 1.50 grams per tonne gold, 0.35 per cent copper, 3.89 grams per tonne silver and 3.72 grams per tonne scandium (Assessment Report 33620; Romios Gold, News Release November 13, 2012).

The type of mineralization which characterizes the Lower gold zone is featured in drill hole KZ12-12, where two distinct mineralized sections were encountered, one, 6.44 metres width which assayed 0.92 gram per tonne gold and 35.09 grams per tonne scandium, and the second, 10.77 metres width that assayed 0.87 gram per tonne gold and 36.55 grams per tonne scandium. Within the latter section, 1.60 metres (5.25 feet) assayed 3.13 grams per tonne gold and 47.00 grams per tonne scandium (Assessment Report 33620; Romios Gold, News Release November 13, 2012).

The primary lithologies encountered at the Ken Zone from KZ12-08, KZ12-09, KZ12-10, KZ12-11, KZ12-12 and KZ12-13 are silicified mudstone, siltstone and sandstone containing well mineralized skarn lenses overlying basalt and basalt clastics layered with chlorite altered pebble conglomerate. The greatest gold mineralization occurs within the upper swarm of skarn-replaced sedimentary layers and along a vertical fault/syenite dyke plane in the basalts below which sit thin veins of visible gold.

In 2012, the Upper Gold Zone was considered to be a replacement skarn of limited extent. The Lower Gold Zone, hosting visible gold in thin veins, appeared to be fault-bound along the southern contact. The Lower Gold zone carries the highest gold grades along this contact, and the strike of the contact is subparallel to a syenite dike. It is reported that there is substantial opportunity for expansion of the Lower Gold Zone. Scandium is highly anomalous and widespread at the Ken Zone. Surface samples display a zone of enriched Scandium (greater that 30 grams per tonne) approximately 650 metres long by 300 meters wide, drilled to a depth of at least 200 metres (Assessment Report 33620).

Highly anomalous scandium values were discovered at surface throughout the Ken Zone and over 600 metres northwestward toward the 2Bad showing (an extension of the Ken Zone). Four samples of the background host rock and one select sample of a sulphide vein assayed from 28.7 to 49.10 grams per tonne scandium (Assessment Report 33620)

WORK HISTORY

Newmont Mining Corporation of Canada Limited in about 1963 acquired 192 claims in the area, including the Lake, Don, Ken, and Mag groups. A magnetometer survey and trenching were carried out during 1961. Granduc Mines, Limited carried out geological and geophysical surveys over the Don, Ken, and Mag groups in 1963.

The property in 1972 comprised the Dirk 1-324 claims. Work by Newmont during the year included geological mapping, an airborne magnetometer survey covering Dirk 1 to 300, a ground magnetometer survey over selected areas, and 97 metres of diamond drilling in 6 holes. Drilling was hampered on the Ken 1-3 holes by a lack of available water and deep snow, necessitating excavation to expose bedrock.

Structural and orthophoto interpretation work was performed on the Gab 5 to 10 claim area in 1987 on behalf of Northwest Gold Syndicate. A 105.67 kilometre airborne magnetic and electromagnetic survey was completed. Minor prospecting occurred on the Gab 7 and 9 and Ken zone.

The Northwest (104B 281) and Camp zone (104B 126) were the focus of extensive drill testing by Gulf between 1987 and 1990 and the Ken Zone was tested by a limited drill program in 1988 by Pezgold Resources (Assessment Report 27996). During the 1988 field season, geological mapping, prospecting and trenching was carried out over the Gab 7, 8 and 10 claim area for Pezgold Resource Corporation. Zones where work was done included the Ken, Glacier and North and South Cuba zones. A total of 398 rock chip samples were collected from the claims. A modest drill program totalling 760 metres was designed to initially test the strength and continuity of these various zones. Six short holes totalling 456 metres tested Ken Zone. The Glacier zone is located 600 metres south of the Ken Showing at 1615 metres elevation and was given its own MINFILE status in 2012.

A 2004 airborne magnetic survey by McLymont Mines Inc. consisted of a total of 580 kilometres and in 2005 an airborne magnetic survey consisted of a total of 1144 kilometres (Assessment Report 27582 and 27996). The results from an airborne magnetic survey completed over a portion of the Newmont Lake Property during the summer of 2005 (Press Release dated April 5, 2006) exhibited geophysical signatures characteristic of alkalic porphyry copper-gold centres. Romios completed a 3D IP survey over the Northwest Zone, Grid 2 and the Ken Zone. Romios also completed a single diamond drill hole on the Black Bear Zone,

In 2007, A total of nine (9) BTW and NQ-size, helicopter-assisted diamond-drill holes, totalling 1,214.6 meters, were drilled within the Newmont Lake property, on the Ken, 2Bad, Bridget, RNT, Vera and Northwest zones (Assessment Report 30449). Only the holes drilled on the Vera, RNT and Northwest Zones were successful at reaching depth. High grade intervals were cut by the hole drilled through the Northwest Zone. Approximately 17.625 kilometres of IP survey, 7.7 km of TDEM and 48.2 kilometres of Magnetics were completed.

In 2012 14 holes in total tested the 72, Ken and Northwest zone. During July and August of 2012, Romios drilled six holes at the Ken zone, which totalled 804.5 metres in length.

Drill holes KZ12-08 and KZ12-09 at the Ken zone confirmed the existence of VMS-related (volcanogenic massive sulphide) mineralization near surface and indicated that the Ken zone was open to the west, south and at depth (Romios Gold Resources Inc., News Release August 9, 2012).

In 2013 Geotech Ltd. carried out a helicopter-borne electromagnetic (ZTEM) and aeromagnetic geophysical survey for Romios Gold Resources Inc over the Newmont Lake Block, comprising parts of the Newmont Lake property (Geophysics Report, Assessment Report 35016, Appendix VI). The following 21 mineral occurrences were covered by the survey: Ken (104B 027), 72 (Dirk) (104B (114), McLymont (104B 126), Northwest (McLymont), (104B 281), Jazzman (104B 282), Ridge (104B 325), Gab Northwest (104B 333), GAB 12 (104B 335), GAB 11 (104B 336), NEW (104B 379), Telena (104B 428), Bren (104B 429), Arseno (104B 432), Matterhorn (Mon 2) (104B 433), Glacier Zone (104B 438), Camp Ridge (104B 441), Kirby NE (104B 442), Black Bear (104B 459), 2Bad (104B 460), Mom's Peak (Bridget) (104B 462), O'Neil (104B 463).

In 2014, Romios Gold Resources Inc. conducted a prospecting and sampling program that included the evaluation of various showings and mineralized occurrences on the Newmont Lake and Trek Properties. A total of 314 rock chip samples and reconnaissance rock samples and 26 stream silt samples were collected.

In 2015, Romios Gold reported that a program of additional prospecting and sampling was carried out on the Burgundy Ridge discovery (Exploration and Mining in British Columbia 2015, page 135)

No work is reported for 2016 or 2017.

In January and February 2018, Geotech Ltd. carried out a helicopter-borne Versatile Domain Electromagnetic (VTEM) and aeromagnetic geophysical survey on behalf of Romios Gold Resources Inc. The survey covered three claim blocks: DIRK, KEN and NORTHWEST comprising parts of the Newmont Lake property and covered a total of 714 line-kilometres (Assessment Report 37492, containing Geotech Ltd Geophysical Report (Appendix Two)). The KEN survey block covered the following mineral occurrences: Ken (104B 027), Matterhorn (Mon 2) (104B 433), Glacier Zone (104B 438), 2Bad (104B 460), Mom's Peak (Bridget) (104B 462), O'Neil (104B 463).

Garnet-magnetite-epidote skarn-type copper-gold-silver mineralization occurs as an arcuate string of showings on the 2018 Ken geophysical survey block: Ken (104B 027), Matterhorn (104B 433), Glacier Zone (104B 438), 2Bad (104B 460), Mom's Peak (104B 462), O'Neil (104B 463). Syenite dikes intersected in drilling at the Ken and Glacier zones are scarce or absent at surface. A potential source pluton for the syenite dikes is indicated by a 1.5 kilometre long aeromagnetic high south of the Ken and 2Bad zones, west of Glacier and O'Neill occurrences, north of Matterhorn and east of Mom's Peak (Figure. 5, Assessment Report 37492). The closest VTEM anomaly is about 2.5 kilometres southeast.

In December 2018, Crystal Lake Mining announced that it had acquired a 100 per cent interest in the 436 square kilometre Newmont Lake Project from Romios Gold.

In 2019, Crystal Lake conducted a drill program, on the Burgundy Ridge prospect area (104B 325) and the Northwest deposit. They also conducted extensive grassroots exploration.

See Northwest (104B 281) for details of work after the amalgamation of tenures by Romios Gold in the 2000s, when airborne geophysics was done over significant land areas and some specific work in the Ken area was reported.
